Calvin and Hobbes Tribute

My family loves Calvin and Hobbes and for the past two years, have created some of their awesome snowmen. This is last year's, in my front yard, with Y-Mountain in the back

Let It Snow!

I've got to admit--even though I prefer warm weather and have a fear of driving in snow (and ice), I do get little butterflies in my tummy when snow comes and coats everything.

Old house

I love houses like this. They have so much character, don't they?

Sunday churches

The First Baptist Church of Provo is located downtown.

Buckling under pressure

Not really sure what happened to this telephone pole, as it's some distance from the road behind a fence. Beavers, perhaps?

Through the woods

This path is found on the hill behind the physical education buildings at BYU.

The Holy War

Every year the "Holy War" tradition between Brigham Young University and the University of Utah takes place. This year, in overtime, BYU threw the winning touchdown pass which, as you will see, pleased more than one "true blue" fan.

Under wraps

Today is the day of big football game between Provo's Brigham Young University and their rivals, the University of Utah from nearby Salt Lake. That makes this possibly the most important day of the year in what has become an epic rivalry that fans call, only partly jokingly, the Holy War. In preparation for the big game, BYU wraps all of the statues on campus in plastic to keep them from being vandalized. Yeah, it's that kind of rivalry.

Sunday churches

Here is the church, here is the steeple, open the doors and see all the people. This LDS church house has a lot of sentimental value for me; I attended church here for many years, I was baptized here, I crushed on boys in Sunday School class here. Those were the days, my friend.

Stairway to Maeser

These steps on BYU campus lead from the athletic buildings on the lower part of campus up to the buildings on the main part of campus. The building at top is the Maeser Building.

A tree grows in Provo

Across town

A view across someone's very large backyard to the rest of town. I like this shot because you can see the Y and the LDS temple, Provo's major landmarks, in the background.

Alumni building

The BYU alumni building was constructed a few years ago on the crest of the campus hill. Although I'm an alum, I've never actually been in, except for when I was picking up my cap and gown. The building's clock tower, however, was quite useful for letting me know how late I was to class.

A carpet of leaves

I feel like there's been a lot of posts with fall leaves lately, but I'm kind of in denial that winter is coming and am clinging to fall with all my strength. I actually love winter; it's just scraping my windshield in the morning that I dislike.

Art

I saw this artist painting this gentleman downtown a few weeks ago. It's not a great picture because I didn't want them to notice me taking it; I didn't want the artist to think I was stealing his idea.

Sunday churches

St. Mark's Lutheran Church, built in 1963.

Flying over Y Mountain

This is a picture of a friend paragliding over Y mountain, named after Brigham Young University.

River bottoms

A view down into northern Provo, an area usually referred to as the river bottoms. Pros: nice and quiet, and it's where I grew up. Cons: if the dam gives, we'll be the first to go.

Do not read

This sign is currently posted downtown. Make of it what you will.

Life at the Provo River

I liked the drain pipe with the fence. I thought it reminded me of a spooky river.

Fall on Fire

Transition of Fall to Winter

Winter is coming and its Beautiful!

Serenity

This just was screaming at me to sit and read a book. What a lovely old home and bench.

Fork in the Road

This was the post for yesterday. Finally after technical difficulties its up!

Downtown

A bicyclist rides through the fall leaves downtown. Downtown Provo is gorgeous all the time, but all the trees make it even better in the fall.

Fort Utah

This recreation of Fort Utah sits in Fort Utah Park in southestwest Provo. Fort Utah was the first major (white) settlement in what would become Provo. It was built in 1849 and housed some 130 settlers in 1850-1851.

Theme day: doorways

This photo is part of the City Daily Photo theme day for November. For this month's theme, doorways, we took a picture of the front door of the Maeser Building on BYU campus. This is one of the oldest buildings on campus and was the first permanent building on upper campus. These days it's used for honors program classes, which means I mostly associate it with bad memories of lots of homework, but it's still, in my opinion, the prettiest building at BYU.

Halloween in Provo

They're among us!

While on a walk with the other contributors of this blog, we came across a house that, well, really knows how to get jazzed for Halloween. I'm not sure if this is a warning that these kinds of creatures would do better to not trick-or-treat at this door or if it's a tribute to many years of children having very odd costume tastes.

Pumpkins

I wish this was my wall and that I had the adorable idea of placing pumpkins along the top of it, but it isn't and I didn't. Still, it makes me excited for Halloween.

Discovery Academy

Discovery Academy is a boarding school for teenagers located in central Provo.

Sunday churches

On Sundays, we want to highlight some of the churches in Provo, of which there are many. This chapel is one of many that serves members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in southwest Provo.

BYU Homecoming

We know the rule is one photo a day, but since this has ruled our lives the last few days, we thought a few extra photos would be all right. Today is the BYU homecoming football game versus TCU, and as we live close to the stadium, the game has taken over our section of town. Above, die-hard fans camp in the stadium parking lot in anticipation of the filming of EPSN GameDay. Photo by Heather.

Above, game day traffic clogs all roads leading to the stadium and, unfortunately, to our apartment. Photo by Heather.

Above, the stadium parking lot is filled with the cars of fans lucky enough to get a close spot. Most attendees will have to park on the side of a road or pay to park in the yard of an enterprising local. Photo by Heather.

Light the Y

As part of the traditional BYU Homecoming festivities, the Y on Y Mountain has been lit every night this week.

Cloudy day

Rain clouds hover over the mountains just northeast of Provo.

Nu Skin

The Nu Skin building is the most prominent in downtown Provo.

Great Steak

The sign for the Great Steak Sandwich Co., located in southwest Provo near Utah Lake State Park, frequently posts messages in commemoration of weddings, birthdays, and other events. The other side currently reads "Charlie rules."

Leaves beneath your feet

Fall is the greatest time of year because of all the bright vibrant colors. Blue sky, red leaves that crunch under your feet as you walk down old town Provo.. its picturesque! If you ever need something to do, go find a part of Provo in the fall and listen to the leaves crunch beneath your shoes, for some reason its great theory.
